Respecting Property Taxpayers Act

This week, I rose in the House to introduce my first bill as a Member of Provincial Parliament, the Respecting Property Taxpayers Act. This bill will increase the number of taxpayer representatives on the MPAC Board to ensure the voices of taxpayers are heard. Constituents in my riding pay some of the highest property taxes in the province, and it is only fair that they should have equal representation on the board that assesses their property values.

Lowering Hydro Rates

We are taking a responsible approach to bring down the cost of hydro. We said we would bring change to Hydro One and we have done that. We said we would put more money back in the pockets of Ontario families and we’re doing that. For the first time in many years, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope and prosperity is returning to Ontario.

Today our government announced that we are transforming the Tarion Warranty Corporation which is responsible for new-home warranties across Ontario.
Our plan for Tarion will:
✅ Create a separate, independent regulator for new home builders and vendors
✅ Require a more balanced, skills-based board
✅ Disclose executive and board compensation
✅ Better inform the public on their rights

I was proud to fight to preserve agriculture on the Rouge National Urban Park, despite the calls of environmental groups to reforest some of the best agricultural land in Canada. Today, farming is protected on the Rouge in perpetuity and will continue to create jobs and local produce.

For today’s #TBT we go back to 1913 and George S. Henry, the 7th MPP representing York East. From 1913 to 1943, MPP Henry was one of the longest serving members of our riding and also held the Office of Prime Minister of Ontario from 1930 to 1934. His government spearheaded the construction of the QEW, Ontario’s first four lane divided highway.

LIFT Tax Credit

Our government is introducing the most generous tax credit in a generation for low-income workers, the Low-Income Individuals and Families Tax Credit. Those who earn less than $30,000 a year will pay zero personal income tax when they file their 2019 tax return.

Thank you to the GM Technical Centre in Markham for hosting a tour for my colleagues and I this morning. This brand new facility is a 150,000 square foot campus with cutting-edge software development and innovation technologies. Here, GM is working on self-driving vehicle systems and brand new safety tools to keep drivers safe.
Our government is going to continue to take steps to encourage more businesses like GM to bring jobs and growth back to our province. Thank you to GM for making this important investment in Ontario’s economy!

Making Ontario Open for Business Act

Today, our government introduced the Making Ontario Open for Business Act. If passed, it will reduce red tape & regulatory burdens on Ontario businesses, while looking out for the health & safety of workers.
We are modernizing the apprenticeship system to ensure that Ontario creates better paying jobs. Changes include lowering journeyperson to apprentice ratios to a 1:1, winding down the Ontario College of Trades, and pausing the increase to the Minimum Wage so businesses have time to adjust. Our message is clear: if you are prepared to do the work, you deserve a shot at the job. Our gov’t is getting out of the way of job creators & making Ontario #OpenforBusiness.

Much of the work that goes on behind the scenes to make the Markham Fair a success comes from a huge team of dedicated volunteers. Many of them have served the fair from 15 years to as much as 60 years and more!
Our community is lucky to have such a dedicated group of people that help preserve our agricultural heritage.
