Statement from Paul Calandra, MPP for Markham-Stouffville, November 9, 2018
“Following the recent municipal election my office has heard numerous concerns from Stouffville parents about racist, offensive, and inappropriate comments posted on social media and attributed to the York Region District School Board Trustee-elect for Whitchurch-Stouffville and East Gwillimbury.
“I have also spoken with parents, who reiterated these concerns, following a public meet-and-greet with the Trustee-elect on Monday evening.
“It goes without saying that racism has no place in our community. The comments attributed to the Trustee-elect are not a reflection of our community and I condemn them unreservedly.
“It is my understanding that newly elected Trustees will only be subject to the YRDSB code of conduct after the swearing-in of new Trustees in early December.
“I and my office have kept in close contact with YRDSB officials and will continue to monitor the situation closely. I have indicated to Board Chair Corrie McBain and Director of Education Louise Sirisko that the board has my full support in their efforts to keep the education of our children as the Board’s top priority.
