Statement from MPP Paul Calandra on the death of former MPP Julia Munro
It is with great sadness that we receive the news that former MPP Julia Munro has passed away.
Julia was not only a politician of significant accomplishment, being the longest-serving female Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario’s history; more importantly, she was a kind and considerate human being, full of generosity and warmth.
In my earliest days in politics, when I was a political staff person during very challenging times, Julia always treated me with respect and kindness.
I recall fondly that when I was initially elected, the very first person to call and offer me help and advice was Julia Munro.
She told me, “Never forget you have family back home - always make sure to take care of your family back home.”
The riding of York-Simcoe was incredibly well represented by Julia; in fact, there is a whole generation of residents who never knew any MPP except Julia, until her retirement in 2018 after 22 years of service.
York-Simcoe was long considered “the safest Conservative riding in in Ontario,” because Julia was unassailable. Her competence, her diligence, her dedication and integrity meant simply that there was no one who could challenge her, and no one ever did (successfully).
Rest in peace, Julia. We offer our sincere condolences to your family and loved ones on the loss of your warm and gracious presence in their lives.
